How to Introduce a Puppy to a Cat
One of the biggest misconception is that cat and dogs can’t live together. However, if you are going to have a puppy and introduce this with a cat, this would need careful planning and patience so that it will become smooth. The introduction has to be done slowly as well and this should be done in a step-by-step process.
When you are buying a puppy and taking it home, you have to separate the puppy first from the cat through placing them in adjacent rooms and one that’s separated by a door. Also make sure that you will give your cat with its needs like a water station, food, toys, litter box, and others more. By doing this, both your puppy as well as the cat will be used in hearing and smelling each other without having to risk direct interactions during the sensitive times.
If you will consider placing a towel or blanket and have the scent of your puppy in the room with your cat, this will be able to help in easing up the transition. You also may place a towel or blanket with the scent of the cat in the room with the puppy. The use of pheromone products likewise help to ease the transition for the cat and puppy.
During such time, it is important to make sure that you spend time bonding with your pet individually first. Give both of them the time to become relax and comfortable in their own areas.
After the two pets are relaxed with the current situation, consider switching their positions. It is important to allow the puppy to occupy the room with where the cat had been and the cat occupy on the room where you have placed the puppy. You must switch their rooms several times at the time of their introductory period.
After both the puppy and cat become comfortable with the scents and the smell of one another, you should then introduce them face to face. You must however consider placing a barrier first in between them. Put the cat in a large open sided carrier or you could use a baby gate to which the cat can’t get over or under.
You have to reward your puppy when it stays calm and quiet when near your cat. You should also avoid letting the puppy harass or chase the cat. Take note that bad behavior should not be allowed, but avoid punishes in case there are lapses that accidentally occurred because it could create an unwanted response between pets.
In most cases, both your cat and puppy will accept each other and they may also become friends in time. Take note that every situation is different and it is really important to consider assessing their reactions well before you allow them both to remain together.
